The boy looked at Randall Peltzer sternly.
“Look Mister, there are some rules that you've got to follow,” he said.
Randall said: “Yeah, what kind of rules?”
The boy looked down at the super cute mogwai and said: “Keep him out of the light, he hates bright light, especially sunlight, it'll kill him.”
Randall nodded.
The boy added: “Don't give him any water, not even to drink.”
Randall nodded again.
“Here’s the most important rule…no matter how much he cries, no matter how much he begs, never feed him after midnight,” the boy said.
When his dad brought the mogwai home, Billy couldn’t help but spend all his time looking at him.
“I’m going to call him Gizmo,” Billy said.
“I want all my friends to see him…”
Randall said: “Well, OK, but there are some important rules you need to follow…”
Just 24 hours later, there was chaos in Kingston Falls.
Billy’s friend Pete spilled water on Gizmo and five more mogwai were spawned, including Stripe.
They tricked Billy into feeding them after midnight and went into cocoons…hatching as evil gremlins.
Spike jumped into a pool and even more gremlins were spawned, rampaging around the town, trashing local businesses like the bar, the bank, and the local cinema, making people flee in fear, hanging off the bar lights and throwing around bottles until they smashed.
The bar tender screamed in fear as they forced her to serve them drinks.
The cinema manager shook with fear as the evil gremlins threatened him until he put on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The manager said: “I know we all joke about gremlins being in the machinery if something goes wrong, but I never thought I’d see them in the flesh.
“It just goes to show you, Billy, that if you don’t take care of little problems when they happen, they can grow into something truly scary!”
Billy nodded his head, and the manager went on: “In my business, I have to ensure I deal with a lot of potential problems before they happen. I need to prove that I have public liability insurance to protect my customers, for example, and the food counter staff must be trained in food safety and hygiene.
“If I get an inspection, I know exactly how to show an auditor that I’m complying with the rules.
“Everything’s online in my compliance software, Mango. It’s so easy to use, too.”
Billy hung his head in shame.
“You know, I could do with something like this to manage the rules about keeping mogwai,” he admitted.
“I got it so wrong and everyone’s suffering now.”
Billy’s dad nodded and said: “Yes, if something goes on the fritz or the washing machine blows up, I’ll now be checking all the closets and looking under the bed.
“You never can tell. There just might be a gremlin in the house.”
