Pete closed the lid of his laptop and looked glumly at Sue.
“I thought we’d get some peace and quiet now they’ve all moved out, but they’re ALL coming back for Christmas…,” he said.
“Lovely!” Sue replied.
“Lovely? Where are they all going to sleep?” Pete asked.
“They’ll have to stay in their old bedrooms,” Sue said, stirring the pot of pasta sauce on the stove.
“In those single beds? With their partners? And Jake has the baby…and there’s your sister…,” Pete put his head in his hands.
Sue’s eye twitched: “Yes, my sister…”
Pete went on: “…and there’s so much to do at school before the holiday. I know I wanted this headteacher job for years, but now I spend half my life finding out where the boiler safety certificate is or digging out staff training records.”
A cough came from the laptop.
Karen said: “You didn’t end the Zoom call, Dad.”
Pete opened up the laptop, smiled, and said: “We’re so looking forward to seeing you all at Christmas!”
Karen smiled: “Sounds like it! I can bring a couple of inflatable mattresses, if you like…”
Sue smiled and said: “We’ll be fine, love. Just bring yourself.”
Karen nodded: “I’m vegan now, did I tell you? Don’t tell Ben, though, because he threatened to post me some bacon the last time I mentioned it…”
Pete nodded.
Karen went on: “You really should get Mango, Dad.”
Pete shrugged: “What’s that good for? Detoxing? Combatting the signs of old age? Giving me hair like Harry Styles?”
Karen sighed: “It’s online compliance software that will keep all your records in the cloud. You’ll know where they all are and can access them at any time wherever there’s an internet connection.
“You can free up your office space from all that paperwork. Plus, the school will need to be thinking about Martyn’s Law and how it will comply with the anti-terror legislation. It’s perfect for that.
“Schools like yours will need to have detailed risk assessments, staff training, and a clear plan for the worst happening, won’t they?”
Pete sighed: “They will indeed. How’s the law degree coming along?”
Karen shrugged: “Fine. My tutor says I’m a born trial lawyer.”
Sue laughed: “Can’t think why they’d say that! Can you, Pete?”
He shook his head: “Inexplicable.”
