Please, Sir! Can we have some Mango?

“Sharon Eversleigh!” the man shouted as he turned the corner into the new Fenn Street School.

Sharon turned and said: “I haven’t been Eversleigh for 45 years!”

She stopped and looked at the man and asked: “Eric? Eric Duffy?”

He nodded: “Haven’t seen you in 50 years!”

Sharon laughed. Eric asked: “What are you doing back here?”

Sharon replied: “My daughter’s the new head teacher.”

Eric guffawed: “What a turn up for the books!”

Sharon smiled: “What about you?”

Eric pointed to one of the classrooms: “My grandson’s in that class. Who’d have thought it? How’s your daughter getting on with her new school then?”

Sharon said: “It’s going well. Lots more teachers like Privet Hedges than Mr Price…remember them?”

Eric nodded: “I do! We were a rowdy and troublesome bunch! This not are much less of a handful.”

Sharon laughed: “Oh yes! Angels by comparison. Julia’s lucky. The pupils aren’t the problem now, it’s all the paperwork. It’s especially difficult now that the new Martyn’s Law is coming in soon. That gives places where the public gather a duty to protect the public from attacks.”

Eric nodded: “Yes, it’s sad we have to do it, but we all need to do our bit, don’t we?”

Sharon agreed: “Very important. I know Julia has been talking to health and safety consultants at Penarth Management about what the school needs to do, and they’re even a part of The Protect Alliance that has a free Martyn’s Law webinar for schools and colleges on March 20.

“I’m worried about all the extra paperwork for staff training and risk assessments, but Julia says she’s got Mango…”

Eric laughed: “Very tropical!”

Sharon giggled: “No! It’s computer software that keeps all the documents online ‘in the cloud’, she says. She can even access her records when she visits me!”

Eric smiled: “I’d rather have mango in my cocktail!”

Sharon laughed: “So would I! That’s the Fenn Street Gang all over, isn’t it?”
